Pichwai

Pichwai paintings are traditional Indian cloth hangings featuring intricate depictions of Lord Krishna, particularly in his child form as Shrinathji. Originating in the 17th century from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, they derive their name from "pichh" (back) and "wai" (hanging), as they were hung behind temple idols.

Pichwai art emerged with the Pushtimarg sect founded by Shri Vallabhacharya, focusing on Krishna worship. Nathdwara became its epicenter due to the Shrinathji Temple, where paintings illustrated divine narratives. Over centuries, the style evolved from temple backdrops to collectible art
